0xDEAFBEEF is an artist and engineer based in Toronto, Canada. Over the past 20 years he has been tinkering in diverse areas overlapping art and technology including music, sound recording, computer animation, blacksmithing and generative art.
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and Cactoid Labs are pleased to present 0xDEAFBEEF: Noumenom + Chronophotograph (May 2023-ongoing), the third volume in the acclaimed Remembrance of Things Future initiative.
Using nothing but a C compiler to create his code-based work, 0xDEAFBEEF’s two-part homage to Muybridge, Noumenon + Chronophotograph, reflects themes related to time, consensus reality, photography and blockchain as sources of objective truth and the limitations therein.
Chronophotograph, 0xDEAFBEEF’s second, companion collection is a series of images procedurally generated with code in reaction to the metaphorical observation of a Noumenon. Through an action mediated by a special blockchain transaction, named ‘releaseShutter,’ one can record a chronophotographic measurement of a Noumemon,
Owners of a Noumenon token can delegate another individual to call the ‘releaseShutter’ function. This participatory dimension allows other to take part in the metaphorical photo captured.
The sixth artist to participate in Remembrance of Things Future, 0xDEAFBEEF is joined by previous artists in this initiative including Monica Rizzolli, Ix Shells, Jen Stark, Emily Xie and Sarah Zucker. Upcoming artists include William Mapan, Tyler Hobbs and others.
